The range of contemporary artistic creations is immense. Most common are those coming from Balinese school of painting. Minutely detailed artworks depicting landscapes and temple scenes can be found in studios and galleries on every corner of Ubud, even in such odd places as walkways in the middle of rice fields.
Painting is an art form still very much alive in the Balinese culture. Even though a lot of painters became influenced by the Westerners, traditional Balinese paintings still show Javanese and Indian influences reflecting passages from stories such as Ramayana or Hindu Mythology. Most of these works are highly detailed with contrast of peaceful and dramatic themes, repeat iconographic elements and often take years to be painted. Balinese remain incredibly proud of their works. Painters are treated with great respect in the Balinese society and are often not allowed to take on other jobs.
