Beach facts

  • Culturally Balinese people believe that beaches are places of demons and therefore had for centuries built all their cities closer to the mountains rather than around the shores. In 1970's when Bali got opened for touristic developments local people thought that tourists were strange and couldn't believe why anyone would want to live near the beaches.
  • Most big beaches in Bali have sellers trying to strike a deal on tourists. Prices are negotiable, but the averages are: chair: RP 20,000, surf board: RP 50,000 per half a day, Coca Cola: RP 6,000 - 8,000, massage: RP 50,000 per hour.
  • When its Full Moon expect to see low tide in the morning and high around 3 pm and the opposite when its New Moon (high tide in the morning and low in the afternoon). This is particularly true in Sanur.
