Puppet show. Dating back to the 9th century, this art has a long history that has been preserved in its original form over time. The show is told behind a white screen lit by fire and accompanied by a gamelan troupe.
The ancient art of Indonesian shadow puppet play (Wayang Kulit), is preformed nightly in Ubud, and traditionally as mythological story telling during ceremonies. The delicate puppets tell a story from the Ramayana, and will typically deal with moral issues to help teach the audience about right and wrong.
There is one puppeteer, the Dalang, who somehow manages to control up to 6 characters at a time. The play of light is mastered in Wayang Kulit, and at times characters seem to materialize out of thin air. It is a unique art-from that has western audiences in wonderment over the mechanics, but in love with the presentation.
