Expect to ...

  • See sunsets around 6:30 PM
  • See the most unique arts and crafts. Imagine not just a community of talented artists, but a whole town of people who devoted their lives to creating spectacular paintings, sculptures and handicrafts.
  • See women who put offerings to the Gods a couple of times a day.
  • See an interesting culture clash. Such as women dancers dressed up in a traditional Balinese costume driving her scooter to a ceremony or a dance performance.
  • Be asked "Where do you come from?", "Where do you live?", "Do you have wife/husband, children?". These are the most common expressions in this culture and are equivalent to out "How are you?" from the Western World. In Balinese cosmology people must place you in some area of the world and will often ask other newcomers from your country if they know you. It may be quite shocking at first, but the question is completely harmless.
  • Be beaten by mosquitoes. There are many anti mosquito products, but somehow they really love to attack newcomers and stop after a while.
  • Find many 24h convenience stores.
  • Be asked for transport hundreds times. Sounds "Transport, transport" prevail! Drivers seem to be one of the most common professions in Ubud and tend to try to get your attention by shouting at almost every corner of the street.
  • Fall asleep with gecko's noise. They are your best friend in combating mosquitoes and bring good luck if make over 9 sounds.
  • Waking up with sounds of roosters. Whether you live in a modern, high end hotel or a small homestay don't' surprised to be awaken in a morning by sounds of roosters. Balinese life starts at 5 am and roosters seem to wake up along with other family members at approximately the same hours.
