Most roads are small and traffic is heavy especially during peak hours. One of the best ways to move around and discover Ubud or the rest of the island is by a motorbike.

Is it difficult?
Driving a motorbike is not as difficult as one may think and learning it shouldn't take you more than a couple of hours. If you have never ridden a motorbike before try automatic over manual. They are much easier to manage and learning takes almost no time. If you are a first time driver avoid busy roads in the middle of the city and practice on smaller less crowded streets.
Few rules to follow
- Drive on the left side of the road!
- Wearing a helmet is mandatory. Fee for not wearing a helmet, if you get stopped by the police is 50,000 Rp.
- Honk when going down curved roads. Most roads are very small, honk if you are going down a road and cannot see drivers coming from the opposite direction.
- International driving license: even though you don't need to show drivers license when renting a motorbike, if you decide to go for a longer drive outside of Ubud take into account that you may be stopped by police. Fee for not having drivers license is around 60,000 Rp.
Roads
- Roads in the center of Ubud are usually pretty busy
- Traffic calms if you head towards North Ubud
- The most spectacular road with beautiful views is on the way to Petulu and around north Ubud (Tegallalang) for the rice field scenery.
- South of Ubud leads to Denpasar. Roads here may often be full of trucks and traffic is usually quite intense.
Police in Ubud
Take under consideration that police is more likely to stop a tourist rather than a local Balinese person. Road patrols in the center of Ubud are rare, but increase as you head towards the south.
