Area About Ubud neighborhoods

Central Ubud

Is the main road, which winds from Peliatan street all the way up to Tjumpuan bridge. This area is beaming with eateries and shops selling paintings and traditional arts and crafts. This is also where Ubud market, palace (home of the king), bale banjar with dance and music performances are located. Up north from the main road are walkways and rice fields, attractive for trekking.

Padang Tegal

Considered to be the center of life and tourism in Ubud. This is the area around Monkey Forrest, Hanoman Street, Dewi Sita, Monkey Forrest streets. Popular for shopping with many small stalls, larger shops with traditional Balinese clothing, paintings and handicrafts, but also hotels, homestays, restaurants, galleries and soccer field.

Penestanan

Area just north west from the main road of Ubud, which used to be the home of many painters and the center for the popular Young Artist movement which started in 1960s.

Nyuh Kuning

Small community and more of a residential area with a number of hotels, villas all set in the rice fields right behind Monkey Forrest. There are a couple of galleries, cafes, spas and restaurants. Altogether not much happens here as life flows in a quiet rhythm which makes Nyuh Kuning a great place to unwind.

Sanggingan

Area North West from the center of Ubud on Sanggingan street with numerous galleries, arts shops, eateries, many luxurious restaurants and hotels.

Sayan

Sayan is a street and a name of a village just north of Penestanan which runs parallel to the Ayung River. If you are on the East bank of the river, you can see a spectacular Ayung river gorge, flanked with many rice terraces. Great place for hiking. There are a couple of very good eateries here and numerous luxury hotels such as Four Seasons, Amandari and villas set amongst rice paddies.

Peliatan

The village of Peliatan and surrounding area have a strong artistic heritage as they come from the royalty of Sukawati. Peliatan is known to be the home of gamelan players who travel the world as Bali cultural ambassadors. The main street of Peliatan is a stretch with very little tourist attractions, hotels of galleries, rather shops and stalls with clothes and daily products. You can find a couple of galleries and great furniture shops that start closer to the Arjuna Statue, next to Andong Street.

Pengosekan

The road to this small village was build only to accommodate Queen Elizabeth who came to visit her favorite painter some time in the 80's. Since then Pengosekan has been known to be the place for artists and painters. There are a couple of warungs, restaurants a few bungalows - mainly galleries.
