The Currency in Indonesia is Rupiah (IDR, Rp), operating on banknotes from Rp 1,000 to Rp 100,000. Be careful when exchanging money or paying as 10,000 banknotes and 100,000 have similar colors and may easily be mistaken.

ATM's & Banks

  • There is a lot of ATMs located in Ubud so you shouldn't have problems with withdrawing money.
  • You can withdraw money from most ATMs in RP 50,000 banknotes and RP 100,000 in some.
  • Most ATMs allow you to withdraw maximum of Rp 1,500 000 and a few such as in Delta Dewata (Jl. Pengosekan) and Bii Bank up to 3,000.000 and those are more secure.
  • You will be able to withdraw money from any ATM machine as long as your card has PLUS, INTERAC and MSCD, VISA signs on it. Check if your card matches the signs of each ATM before withdrawal.  
  • Most common International banks have representative offices. The biggest are: Bii, Permata, BCA, Commonwealth.

Money exchange

  • Money exchange places are located on almost every corner.
  • Some places only accept new bank notes and will refuse to exchange bills older than 2003.
  • Exchanging money in Ubud is safe. We haven't heard any bad stories about tellers in Ubud, which cannot be said about those in South Bali.

Credit Cards & traveler's cheques
Visa and MasterCard are accepted in some, but not all eateries, very rarely in shops. Expect problems with traveler's cheques since they are not accepted everywhere.
